In recent years, Cambodia has experienced significant economic growth thanks in part to investments from China and other Asian countries that are looking to move their less capital-intensive manufacturing operations to the country.
Furthermore, because Cambodia’s infrastructure for social community, commerce, and older forms of ICT (such as landlines and SMS) is not well-established, the country has been able to easily adopt and utilize new technologies without facing many of the barriers that more developed economies have encountered.
As a result, the internet economy in Cambodia has seen significant growth. Internet penetration has rapidly increased in recent years, from 18% in 2015 to an estimated 74% in 2021 according to data compiled by Trading Economic. However, please note that the data provided may not be accurate, as the World Bank does not have any information on this subject for Cambodia after the year 2017, despite the data being cited as coming from the World Bank.
Social media in particular has seen a drastic change over the past decade. The country went from Facebook being the only accessible social platforms (Due to most social platforms were blocked by the government) to now almost all the international ones are available within the country.
However in recent years, there has been a government push again to regulate social media in Cambodia to control “fake news” and misinformation. The government has also been using social media to disseminate its own messaging and propaganda. It would be interesting to see how this trend evolve over the coming years.
